In general, the larger a piece of wood is, the more susceptible it is to cracking. The piano soundboard is a very large piece of wood. It vibrates to amplify the sound of the strings. The bridges are also wood; they support the strings and are attached to the soundboard.
When the soundboard shrinks, it flattens, and the tension of the strings over the bridge is reduced. This causes the pitch (in its mid-range and treble section) to go flat.
If pianos are exposed to inconsistent humidity levels, the soundboard will be stressed and its integrity will be threatened. The piano sound board will be susceptible to cracking in extreme dryness. This is a very costly repair.
